Descripción:
General Purpose: To develop specific products, oriented to a broad audience, about some of the main dimensions of how religious conservatisms operate globally against SOGI rights. In addition to the research, 2 webinars will be held, one in English and the other in Spanish to present the main findings of the research. The research aims to achieve six main objectives:a) To summarize the rise and global trends of the religious right actors and discoursesb) To exemplify the main negative impacts of the religious right actions and discourses on SOGI rights c) To consider the instrumentalization of faith as a key dimension used by the religious right against SOGI rights and LGBTI communitiesd) To identify and analyze the funding sources of the religious right e) Describe the importance and impact of religious initiatives that promote SOGI rightsf) To analyze the challenges and limitations of funding LGBTI affirming faith workIn order to combine a global and a regional / local perspective, the research will consider the impact of religious right at the transnational and national levels, paying particular attention to the following regions: Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe.MethodologyTo achieve the specific objective of this section, three types of secondary sources will be used: a) Documents from the International Human Rights System, b) NGO thematic reports, and c) academic journals. During a first stage of the investigation, a systematic search of these three types of sources will be carried out through online search engines. However, the research team has previously identified some elementary documents that will be included as a central part of the material to be analyzed:?Documents from the International Human Rights System: Special and General Comment/reports produced by the Human Rights Committees of the United Nations System; the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Also, special reports from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR); reports of the Special Rapporteurs, etc. will be considered.?NGO thematic reports regarding the impacts of the religious right on LGBT population: Human Rights Watch, Sexual Rights Initiative, Association for Women?s Rights in Development (AWID), Political Research Associates, ARROW, International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN), IPAS (especially its Global Rights Watch and Eye on the Rights? initiatives), Amnesty International, Catolicas por el Derecho a Decidir (Catholics for Choice), Centro Latino-Americano em Sexualidade e Direitos Humanos (CLAM), Sexuality Policy Watch (SPW) , Center for Education, Counseling and Research (CESI), Euroregional Center for Public Initiatives (ECPI), among others. Furthermore, the search will include printed and electronic material produced or provided by key informants, as well as shadow reports submitted from civil society to UN treaty body committees.?Journal review: A systematization of the main electronic international journals will be made, considering specially the following scientific research engines: The Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), SAGE, JSTOR, EBSCO Host, the online library of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the online library of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO). Furthermore, the research team has already identified some key academic projects focused on the religious right and its impact on sexual and reproductive rights in Latin America and Europe. The working papers and academic articles published within these projects will be consulted for this research. To achieve a regional perspective, the research team will work with two experts proposed by GPP, who will give their insights on the processes, challenges and specificities of the cases of Africa and Eastern Europe (particularly Russia). Specifically, three key questions will be proposed to work together with the experts, in order to gather information and develop the responses in terms of the constraints, challenges and opportunities in each context: a) Who are the main actors of the religious right in those regions? b) Which are their main strategies? c) What are the main impacts against LGBTI communities and SOGI rights? At the beginning of the project, once the contacts with the two experts have been made, the work team will develop a more detailed research calendar together with them.
