Regional and International trends identified in the dispute over abortion rights in El Salvador

With the aim to explore and study the abortion debate in El Salvador, we have met with a serie of new academic challenge, entailed by the creation of conservative interreligious alliances. If in the past, the Catholic Church led the opposition to abortion in this Central American country, in the last few years, the rise of the conservative evangelical churches has changed the landscape actors opposing abortion, this phenomenon is not unique to the Salvadoran case. These phenomena are clearly revealed in the cases of Brazil and Peru, among others, and although less evidently in Argentina. Thus, this presentation seeks to understand through the case study of El Salvador, the current conservative arena against abortion regarding religious trends in their specific conextion with the legal activisim.
