Design, construction and testing of radioprotection structures for operating a research 225kVp X-ray generator

X-ray sources are commonly found in research laboratories. The use of X-ray generators for scientific purposes represents a valuable tool in different areas, like material science, atomic physics as well as biological and medical physics; among others. Safe and adequate operation of radiation generators demands suitable facility design and careful verification of radioprotection standards.The present work proposes the use of Monte Carlo techniques for design and optimization of shielding characteristics of a bunker facility for operating a 225kVp X-ray generator to be installed in the academic laboratory environment. To this aim, dedicated subroutine was developed based on FLUKA main code that allowed to calculated primary photon fluences according to specific facility designs and shielding properties. After bunker construction, radiation exposure were carefully recorded at different locations and for different operating configurations in order to verify and confirm the suitability of the proposed method.
