Descripción:
Neutrons are unique as probes into matter; they can reveal what other techniques cannot see. They thereforeprovide a powerful tool for investigating the natural world and have long played a role at the forefront ofmodern scientific research. The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) [1] is an international research centre at the leading edge of neutron scienceand technology located in Grenoble, France. This report summarises the internship followed by trainee Miguel Pardo Sainz at the ILL, with the helpof Jes´us Javier Campo Ruiz, ICMA?s director and teacher responsible for the student; Gabriel Cuello, instrumentscientist at the Diffraction Group at ILL and trainee supervisor; and Juan Basbus, researcher atCNEA (Argentine) and trainee at ILL.The subject of the internship was the use of neutron powder diffraction analysis as a tool to characterizemultifunctional materials. The main objectives were: to analyse real powder diffraction data, already collected, with the FullProf packagesoftware [2]; and to participate in several powder diffraction experiments carried out by the supervisorat the ILL in different instruments (D1B, D2B, D20, . . .) [3].Several activities were accomplished involving both data analysis with FullProf and participation in powderdiffraction experiments, such as: refinements of simple and complex materials, with and without magneticphases; calibration of instrument D2B?s detectors; data acquisition of a complex material with a gradient intemperature; introduction course to programming in Python; etc.In the following chapters more detailed descriptions of the activities carried out are given.
