Resumen:
The presence of Divalent Metal Transporter 1(DMT1) in renal tissue could be suggestive of an iron regulatory function of kidney. The objective of our study was to assess changes in DMT1 renal expression in mice with hemolytic anemia. Anemia was induced in mice with phenylhydrazine (60 mg/kg, days 0 and 2). Expression of DMT1 was evidenced in renal tissue (days 3, 4 and 5) with specific affinity purified anti-DMT1 antibody (1:500; 1:1000). In non-anemic mice, DMT1 expression showed homogeneous distribution both in cortex and renal medulla. Under acute hemolysis, DMT1 expression was detected mainly in major diameter tubules of inner medulla. During anemia restoration, renal DMT1 returned to basal conditions. We conclude that hemolytic anemia induces a redistribution of renal DMT1 expression, suggesting a possible role of kidney in urinary iron balance.
