Resumen:
Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) continues to be a significant problem for preterm newborn infants. The treatment of this condition has evolved over the years, resulting in increased survival rates in the most extreme cases, with a possible increase inthe rate of associated Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD). Invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) represents an important risk factor in the development of pulmonary injury and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most widely studied noninvasive respiratory support technique in preterm newborn infants. It has been tried as a primary form of support for RDS and as continual support after extubation from mechanical ventilation. In recent years, different non-invasive ventilation methods have been developed to prevent lung injury and decrease the duration of IMV: Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV), High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), Nasal High Frequency Ventilation (NHFV), Noninvasive Ventilation-Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NIVNAVA). This chapter describes the different NIV modalities and reviews available evidence for each of these therapies.
