Resumen:
The paper explores the social representations about Buenos Aires as a modern metropolis generated by the implementation of the underground railways in the period in which the city went through a significant process of modernization (1880-1940). From a cultural analysis of mobility, the history of the Buenos Aires Underground Railways is reconstructed through the material and cultural changes that the new transport technologies and speeding-up of movement provoked in the metropolitan everyday life, particularly in the social practise of commuting. The hopes and fears, excitements and frustrations that these changes involved inform us about how modernity and modernization were conceived, perceived, and experienced in a peripheral metropolis as Buenos Aires.
