Resumen:
Science is not as neutral and objective as it is claimed to be. People within the system think of it as a meritocratic system, yet true meritocracy is only fair when everyone is given equal opportunities. Scientists with caregiving responsibilities, often women, will carry a heavy burden of unpaid labor, and therefore will suffer downfalls in performance. We studied the distribution of unpaid domestic labor, uninterrupted paid work time, career paths, perception of researchers’ own work and that of others, and the reciprocal effect between family and work. More women are caregivers, dedicate less uninterrupted time to paid work, and more to unpaid domestic labor, especially when working from home. Women tend to start their careers younger than men, but promote to higher categories older, and value their own work more poorly than men. Female and male researchers choose male over female referents and advisers, especially among older generations. The interaction between family and work is perceived negatively by women in early career stages. Women and men felt supported by their advisers with respect to family-related issues. Public policies must help relieve women from heavy unpaid caregiving labor and facilitate leaving their home space to detach from domestic issues tasks. Greater peer recognition of women’s research should increase their participation as advisers and referents, and improve perception of their own work and those of other women. Public policies should aim at a fairer and more equitable working environment for women.
