Resumen:
To evaluate the effect of postnatal administration of a progestin on uterine adenogenesis in domestic dogs and cats. Ten female puppies and 10 female kittens were randomly assigned within the first 24 hours of birth to: Medroxyprogesterone acetate 10mg/100g SC (MPA; n=6) or Placebo (PLC; n = 4). All the females were followed up until puberty. Then, all the queens and 4 bitches (2 MPA and 2 PLC) were mated. Ovulation and pregnancy rates were calculated and then the females were ovariohysterectomized. The 7/10 ovulated queens demonstrated to be fertile without differences between treatments (P>0.1). Only 1 of the 2 MPA and both (2/2) PLC mated bitches became pregnant. No clinical side effect was observed in any dog (P> 0.1), while one pregnant MPA queen developed an open cervix pyometra. Microscopic assessment of the uteri revealed the presence of uterine glands in all the animals of both species and no significant differences between treatments in the area occupied by uterine glands and the height of the uterine epithelium. It is concluded that a single postnatal supraphysiological dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate did not ablate uterine adenogenesis neither in dogs nor cats. Furthermore, in felids this treatment seemed to predispose to uterine disease without prevention of fertility.
