Resumen:
Sucrose-sweet cola drinking resulted in loss of β cell function and depletion of insulin content. Treatment had no effect on either proliferation or apoptosis in β cells. Activation of dedifferentiation or trans-differentation mechanisms might account for the loss of β cells. Oxidative stress is likely involved as suggested by increased expression of thioredoxins and low circulating levels of CoQ10. Results support a glucotoxic effect of sucrose-sweet cola drinking in rat pancreas.
