Resumen:
The purpose of this paper is to review the main contributions of Marx and Marxism to economic development in the context of the transformations suffered by the debates that dominated the discussions on economic development from its origins until the present-day; and to determine the relevance of Marxian development theories in order to understand the current challenges that developing countries have. In order to carry this out, this paper has three sections after this brief introduction. Second two reviews Marx?s contributions to economic development and presents the main theories of imperialism, monopoly capital, dependency theory, and unequal exchange. Section three outlines the main elements that reshaped the global economy and the specific way in which economic development and its debates were transformed until our days. Section four concludes this paper by presenting the main contributions of Marxian theory to economic development and its current relevance.
