Cerato-platanins: Elicitors and effectors

Cerato-platanins are an interesting group ofsmall, secreted, cysteine-rich proteins that have been implicated in virulenceof certain plant pathogenic fungi. The relatively recent discovery of theseproteins in plant beneficial fungi like Trichodermaspp., and their positive role in induction of defense in plants againstinvading pathogens has raised the question as to whether these proteins areeffectors or elicitor molecules. Here we present a comprehensive review on theoccurrence of these conserved proteins across the fungal kingdom, theirstructure-function relationships, and their physiological roles in plantpathogenic and symbiotic fungi. We also discuss the usefulness of theseproteins in evolving strategies for crop protection through a transgenicapproach or direct application as elicitors.
