Use of management practices that improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) would produce a high impact on productive systems. The aim of this study was to determine changes in NUE and their components, physiological efficiency (PE) and recovery efficiency (RE), in response to variation in plant density (D), and in timing of nitrogen (N) application (T). Two experiments were carried out in 2009/10 with maize under no-tillage; one under rain-fed and the other under irrigated conditions. Increases in D resulted in greater NUE at V6, V12 and physiological maturity (PM). The greater NUE observed at V6 and V12 was mainly explained by increments in RE. The increase in NUE at PM resulted from increases in PE and in RE. RE, however, was affected only under irrigation.
