Resumen:
Titanium dioxide (TiO2)is a well–known semiconductor used in a wide range of industrial applicationsincluding biomedical, energy, environmental, painting and food industries.Usually, it is employed as particles dispersed in a matrix and nowadaysnanosized structures are widely being used. When immobilized TiO2 isneeded, coatings with a variety of morphologies and structural characteristicscan be fabricated for varied applications. Currently, innovations in thenanoscale technology may improve characteristics of TiO2 coatingswith properties suitable for new applications. Some strategies to improveperformance are doping, tailoring the band–gap wavelength to absorb visiblelight, adding active sites on surfaces, promoting changes on charge carriersdirection, changing wettability and improving mechanical properties. In thischapter, a broad overview of the state ofthe art on the nanoscale TiO2 for energy, construction, water treatment,biomedical devices, food additives and food packaging applications ispresented.
