Global climate change is a complex process in which many of the factors involved are changing not only due to anthropogenic activities, but also due to natural causes. In this book we address the impact of global change-related drivers in the Atlantic Patagonian coastal ecosystem, one of the most productive and biodiverse marine areas in the world. In this section we define the conceptual basis and the analytical framework for the study of global change. We focused on the main climatic and human drivers that have been altering the atmosphere and the structure of marine ecosystems in Atlantic Patagonia. On these bases, we explore the responses of ecosystems to the external perturbations, emphasizing on the critical processes and thresholds which could determine irreversible situations.
