Resumen:
The α-lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant indicated in patients with diabetic polyneuropathy. Previously, we have described that the administration of ALA to donor and recipient of patients undergoing simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplantation reduces inflammatory mediators, pancreatic enzymes and improves short term clinical outcomes (Transplantation. 2016 Apr;100(4):908-15). In kidney transplantation, the ischemia?reperfusion injury suffered by the graft is related with delay graft function (DGF) which is a critical factor that determines the early outcome of the graft. In our country, more than 60 % of kidney transplant patient present DGF. The aim of the present work was to evaluate whether the administration of ALA to recipient and the graft could improve early clinical outcomes of kidney transplant patients. These results show that the use of ALA is safe in kidney transplantation. Furthermore, this study shows that even though ALA treatment could not avoid DGF, it can improve the patient conditions by reducing the dialysis requirements.
