Resumen:
Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a major cereal crop which shows great diversity worldwide. Recently, with the development of molecular markers, methods of assessing genetic diversity at molecular level have advanced rapidly. Molecular data can be a valuable tool to select a subset of a larger germplasm collection containing the highest genetic diversity (core collection) in combination with traditional phenotypic and pedigree data, reducing further genotyping and phenotyping work. Germplasm collections are valuable sources for mapping genes/QTLs through linkage-analysis and/or association mapping and the characterization of population structure (assessing the relatedness among accessions) within germplasm collections is critical to identify and correctly interpret the association between functional and molecular diversity.
