Thousands ofyouths actively participate in the student movements, political parties of theentire ideological spectrum, and various social movements linked, for example,to human rights and sexual politics. This dynamic participation in politicscame after decades of apparent youth disaffection and took scholars andcommentators by surprise. Yet the current youth involvement in politics is nothingnew in the region, and it rather draws on previous traditions, organizations, and demands that young people generated throughout the twentieth century. Thispresentation will analyze the changes and continuities in the shaping of youthas a political actor in Latin America by looking at the ways, spaces, and formsof political action that young men and women configured from the onset of theUniversity Reform Movement to the ?resistance? to the last militarydictatorships.
