Progressevelopingnewtools,assays,andapproachestoassesshumanhazardandhealthriskprovidesanopportunitytoreevaluatethenecessityofdogstudiesforthesafetyevaluationofagrochemicals.Aworkshopwasheldwhereparticipantsdiscussedthestrengthsandlimitationsofpastuseofdogsforpesticideevaluationsandregistrations.Opportunitieswereidentifiedtosupportalternativeapproachestoanswerhumansafetyquestionswithoutperformingtherequired90-daydogstudy.Developmentofadecisiontreefordeterminingwhenthedogstudymightnotbenecessarytoinformpesticidesafetyandriskassessmentwasproposed.Suchaprocesswillrequireglobalregulatoryauthorityparticipationtoleadtoitsacceptance.Theidentificationofuniqueeffectsindogsthatarenotidentifiedinrodentswillneedfurtherevaluationanddeterminationoftheirrelevancetohumans.Theestablishmentofinvitroandinsilicoapproachesthatcanprovidecriticaldataonrelativespeciessensitivityandhumanrelevancewillbeanimportanttooltoadvancethedecisionprocess.Promisingnoveltoolsincludinginvitrocomparativemetabolismstudies,insilicomodels
