Resumen:
A synopsis of the history of the most important cactus from the economical point of viewit is made. It is not a wildplant, but the result of human selection for thousands years atMéxico, and at the last centuries at very many tropical áreas of the entire world. Some ofthe main facts about it world wide distribution at tropical áreas are mentioned. The spinyforms are mentioned as regressions for many countries, including México, where also spinyforms can be the result of hibridation and introgression with wild species
