Resumen:
Introduction: Abnormal oro-buccal functions including dysarthria, sialorrhea and dysphagia commonlyaffect patients with Parkinson´s disease (PD).Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of such oro-buccal symptoms at baseline in the first 419 PDpatients included in the COPARK cohort and to analyze their correlations with patients demographic andclinical characteristics, drugs consumption and Health-Related Quality of Life. Methods: Patients were assessed using the Unified Parkinson´s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), theHospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the PDQ-39. Dysarthria, sialorrhea and dysphagia weredefined as UPDRS items 5, 6 or 7 ≥ 1, respectively. Results: Patients had a mean age of 69±10, a median Hoehn and Yahr score in the On condition of 2.0and a mean PD duration of 6±5 years. Dysarthria was present in 212/419 patients (51%), sialorrhea in154/419 (37%) and dysphagia in 77/419 (18%). Forward logistic regression showed that the presence ofeach of the 3 oro-buccal symptoms was significantly correlated with that of the two others. Othercorrelations included male gender, hallucinations, disease severity, levodopa use and lack of opiatesconsumption for dysarthria; disease severity, orthostatic hypotension and absence of antidepressantsconsumption for sialorrhea; female gender, motor fluctuations and depressive symptoms for dysphagia.None of the three oro-buccal symptoms were associated with a reduced PDQ-39 scoreConclusion: Oro-buccal symptoms were present in 2 out of 3 patients with moderate PD, the presence ofeach symptoms being significantly correlated with that of the 2 others. Oro-buccal symptoms were notassociated with a reduced HRQoL score.
