Resumen:
In this work we described the interdisciplinary framework adoptedunder CLIMAX project to address the co-design and co-production ofclimate knowledge in southern South America and to improve theusefulness of regional climate services. CLIMAX project is anEuropean-South American initiative funded by Belmont Forum(climax-sa.org).This project includes the involvement of the Regional Climate Centerfor Southern South America and makes focus in two specific cases:Brazil electrical energy sector and northeastern Argentinaagriculture sector, which is the focus of this presentation.In the Argentina case study, the interdisciplinary approach includesthe participation of climate scientists and anthropologist, as wellas personnel from the Argentina National Weather Service (SMN). Asmall department, called Bermejo, from Chaco province in northeasternArgentina was chosen to develop the project, based on the knowledgeon the climate variability and predictability there and the diversityof socio-economic actors present in the region. In this sense, keyactors have been identified from the SMN, local rural cooperativesand NGOs; and based on an initial meeting held with them, the need todevelop climate information on daily, subseasonal and seasonal arevery important, including on the onset and demise of the rainyseason. During the first year of the project, the strategy to achieve theobjectives had multiple facets. First, it encompassed theanthropological field work, to build bonds with local institutionsand actors and to map the socio-economic and political structure.Then, it included the development of co-desing and co-productionmeetings between anthropologist and climatologist, based on thefeedback from the anthropological field work and the monitoring andprediction tools already developed by climatologist; as well asco-design and co-production meetings with local actors, to build aco-production dialogue in which scientist and actors are engaged inthe production of a new kind of climate knowledge. From the climate sciences perspective, the participation in theworkshops included the dissemination of experimental climatemonitoring and prediction tools, all of them published in a portalhttp://climar.cima.fcen.uba.ar.In addition, there were specific activities conducted to engage localknowledge with scientific based knowledge. The activities dealt withthe concept of climate variability, the classification of months andseasons based on the amount of rainfall occurred and the impact ofENSO on monthly rainfall extremes, of either type. In addition, thelack of rainfall measurements for the department encouraged scientistand actors to develop a collaborative monitoring precipitationnetwork. Scientists assisted the community to build the network andto build the rainfall register while the community commits to carryout the measurements on daily basis, following internationalstandards. These activities are complemented with the co-design of amobile-friendly application that allows and facilitates the access oflocal actors to the meteorological and climate information beingdeveloped for the region. Among the construction of the dialogue between scientist and actors,the interdisciplinary framework adopted allows us to reduce thedistance between scientist and community, building strong linksbetween them to proceed in the co-production process in the future.In this sense, the plans for the following year includes thepreparation of new workshops to continue developing climate knowledgebased on the scientific research already done and including theactive participation of local actors in the process of design.p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; direction: ltr; color: rgb(0, 0, 10); line-height: 120%; text-align: left; }p.western { font-family: "Liberation Serif", serif; font-size: 12pt; }p.cjk { font-family: "Noto Sans CJK SC Regular"; font-size: 12pt; }p.ctl { font-family: "FreeSans"; font-size: 12pt; }a:link { color: rgb(5, 99, 193); }
