Resumen:
Pre-Columbian cultures’ iconography present in the Oyola Caves, in the northwestern Argentine province of Catamarca, were investigated by an interdisciplinary group. The investigation of the pictographs and petroglyphs included photographic surveys, archaeological analysis, plastic analysis, production of visual art, and chemical analysis to determine the composition of pigments and binders. The motifs represented include camelids, jaguars, human bodies, snakes, and geometric designs. The dominant color is white in various degrees of saturation and brightness, although drawings in red, orange, and black were also found. Small samples of the paintings were extracted and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and microscopic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The chemical composition of the different samples, as well as the spacial disposition of the paintings, suggest a diachronic development for the rock art in the Oyola Caves.
