Resumen:
This paper examines some quality practices in human resources management or simply “best practices” among a sample of 104 firms in Uruguay. First, it explores to what extent selected best practices occur among a sample of workplaces.  Second, it examines different profiles or managerial styles that cluster different firms.  Three clusters are identified and compared against a well-known typology of firm´s managerial profiles: simple, professional and strategic.  The results show that the fit between these theoretical profiles and the empirical profiles of firms is far from perfect.  Among the firms of the sample, a quasi-simple profiles is the most common.  We conclude the paper by stating that further development is needed to advance when and why firms adopt some managerial styles and not others.
