The official and the danseuse: morality, gender and work in South American artistic circuits

This presentation focuses on the creation of an international social problem of moral vigilance in artistic work relationships characterized by the itinerancy of women, men and children. In particular, it proposes that the daily work of consular officials was a constitutive part of a practice of international surveillance practices that sometimes took the form of an international police des moeurs. To explore that, the text looks for three moments of interaction between police and consular officers, between the 1880s and the 1920s. The shifting meaning of trafficking in women was a result of their interactions with a sex and artistic entrepreneurial that acquired increasingly monopolistic features
