EThispaper studies the impact of the United Nations (UN) declaration of theInternational Women's Year (IWY) (1975) in Argentina, where the event tookplace just before the military coup of March 1976. In the international level,the UN event was crossed by the tensions of the Cold War. In the national level,these tensions were not so much relevant. Instead, it is important to consider thestrains within the ruling Peronist Party and the wide range of leftistpolitical forces opposing the turn to the right and the authoritarian traits ofthe government. In this scenario, women's rights were a disputable politicalcause subordinated to the logic of a situation of ascending political violence.In 1976, the beginning of a genocide dictatorship obstructed any follow-up ofthe IWY actions and any kind of democratic political expression was persecuted.This article is based on the historical method, using primary and secondarysources to contribute to the general assumption that in Argentina the eventsaround the UN initiative made women’s struggles more visible, primarily towomen activists themselves, shedding light to the heterogeneity andfragmentation of women’s activism as a nascent social space.
