The processes upon absorption of light by the photocatalyst, and the mechanisms in heterogeneous photocatalysis induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and for the extension of the absorption to the visible spectrum, are summarized in this article with the intention of giving the reader a wide overview of the underlying processes.
