In 2008, Fernando Lugo´s victory and the break of the Colorado Party hegemony, in power since 1954, gave way to a series of questions and a lot of analysis in the field of the social sciences in the context of the new Latin American governments. However, these governments have favoured short term views without paying attention to analysis that benefit a long term sociological historical perspective on Paraguayan democracy and the changes that took place in the region.This articles aims at analyzing the sociohistorical conditions of democracy in Paraguay, in a long term perspective, from the beginnings of the configuration of the political regime (1870) to the present, considering a critical juncture the change that the Paraguayan political system has experienced at least since March 1999. The aim is to study the meanings and the political practices, the national discourses, the patterns of accumulation and the political actors.
