Mugil cephalus: cosmopolitan species or species complex?

Abstract The cosmopolitan distribution of /Mugil cephalus/ is actually under discussion. Morphometrics based on Landmark distances, meristics and 12S rRNA (domain 1 and 2), cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (cytb) mitochondrial DNA markers data of different locations around the world are presented. Combined results indicate a species complex on a global scale and the necessity of taxonomic revision.
