Within the Historical Centres, the housings and their inhabitants are substantial since they grant life to each valued environment. In every Centre different residential typologies which are outlined in agreement to every past and present historical period are hoarded. San Francisco of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, boast one of the largest areas of heritage value that has been investigated and treated. In its Historic Centre, in particular its Buffer Area, stands out a residential typology that characterizes it: the patio (courtyard) houses. This housing, arriving in Quito together with the European "conquest", is the one that is analyzed in the present writing. Focusing on the Buffer Area and its patrimonial fragment of the San Juan neighbourhood, through a mainly qualitative approach that articulates bibliographic studies, in situ surveys, interviews and opinion polls, users and the functional dynamics developed in the courtyards of these housings are explored.
