Abstract.
Theputativeancestorsoftheallopoly-
ploidhybrid
Nicotianatabacum havedistinctflower
features,apparentlysuitedeitherforhawkmothor
batpollination.Thissuggeststhatprogenitorswere
reproductivelyisolatedbymechanicalandetholog-
icalbarriers.However,thepresentdatashowthat
innaturalpopulationspollenvectorscouldbe
sharedbytwoofthepossibleprogenitors.Pollen
vectorsofoneofthepossiblemaleprogenitors(N.
otophora)wereshort-andlong-tonguedhawk-
mothsandanectar-feedingbat,whilethoseofthe
femaleancestor(N.sylvestris)wereonlylong-
tonguedhawkmoths.Thelatterarethenthemost
likelyvectorsresponsibleforthepresumedsponta-
neoushybridization.Thesedataalsosuggestthat
interspecificpollentransferoccurredmorelikelyin
onedirection.
