Cartoonists' world: An approach to their work and ideas

Based on the idea that cartoons are a discursive genre, the aims of this presentation are, firstly, to identify and characterize subgenres of cartoons considering thematic, pragmatic, modal and rhetoric levels, and secondly, to zoom into the rhetoric and modal levels in order to study modal variations in the rhetorical resources used to create humour in cartoons. The corpus is composed of 85 cartoons selected by cartoonists from 22 nationalities as representative of their style, in the context of a comprehensive questionnaire which explored the cartoonist?s professional background, manner of working, view of cartoons as a genre, and view of his/her own work.
