Resumen:
The facts leading the distribution of alternating copulas such as those found in Iberian Romance languages has inspired a wide range of proposals. This has meant not only the use of various technical concepts, but also a noticeable lack of consensus as to their definition, the linguistic domain/mechanism where they are encoded, especially, the diagnostics that identify them. This paper proposes a data-based review of the concepts employed in the analysis of distribution ser/estar (telicity/coercion/perfectivity/inchoativity) as a first but necessary step in moving towards a theoretically and empirically accurate analysis of these copulas and the facts behind their distribution. We will focus on the problems triggered by a nontrivial lexical alternation in the face of proposals based on morphological/conceptual parameters (perfectivity); constructional semantics (telicity); mechanisms external to the lexico-grammatical system (coercion) and conceptual-semantic divisions internal to the stative type (SLP/ILP), with special emphasis on the data relegated in each case and its relevance in the elucidation of an accurate analysis of ser/estar.
