Resumen:
Biomethane potential (BMP) of different urban and agro-industrial residues and energy crops of high availability in the Argentine Pampean region was evaluated. The substrates analyzed were fresh swine wastewater (SW), cheese whey (CW), the organic fraction of solid waste (OFSW) and two types of sorghums silages: silero (SSS) and biosilero (BSS). The experiment was carried out under mesophilic conditions using previously degassed sewage sludge as inoculums and a ratio substrate/inoculums of 1 (in units of volatile solids VS). The highest biogas (630 mL gVS-1) and methane (503 mL gVS-1) productions were obtained for OFSW while CW and SW also showed promising values of BMP for energy purposes being higher than 380 mL gVS-1. Despite BMP of sorghum silages achieved lower values (around 190 mL gVS-1) due mainly to its lignin content, their high productive potential of biomass per hectare makes this resource a significant source of bioenergy. The results obtained indicated that anaerobic digestion is a proven technology that could be spread out in the Pampean Region of Argentine not only for environmental reasons but also to increase the fraction of clean energy in the current fossil energy matrix.
