A mathematical tool for the development of lateral flow assays is presented, which is based on the underlying transport and reaction processes. The minimization of the sample volume in test strips isstudied as an example of practical interest. The easy solution of this problem demonstrates the capabilities of the model to assist test developers in the design and optimization of new devices.
