The genus Mactra (Linnaeus, 1767) in the Paraná Formation

The paleogeographic evolution of Tertiary deposits of Entre Ríos province can be reconstructed studying the invertebrate molluscan fauna. During an ongoingrevision of the fauna represented in the Paraná formation, the taxonomic status of Mactra bonariensis Philippi, 1893 was updated. The absence of type material of this species plus the urbanization of the type locality, suggest the designation of Neotype. The morphological characters of M. bonariensis based on the original description and illustration do not allow stabilize the species. No records of this taxa were found in paleontological and malacological collections of South America that can be designated as Neotype. However, after the exhaustivefieldwork, we designate a Neotype of M. bonariensis specimens recovered from the locality ?La Juanita? in the Paraná formation. The presence of Mactra bonariensis associated to other bivalves in ?La Juanita? reveal a locality with the most number of fossils invertebrates represented and recorded in the Paraná Formation.
