Resumen:
In the last decades, soft contact lenses (SCLs) have been thoroughly investigated as a technology platform for the localized sustained release of drugs in the treatment of ocular pathologies [1]. SCLs can improve the bioavailability and prolong the half life of ophtalmic drugs in the ocular mucosa. On the other hand, the search for new antimicrobial agents for the treatment of ocular pathologies is under constant development. This work investigated the synthesis of two types of hydrophilic networks functionalized with β-CD for the localized release of a novel antimicrobial 5,6-dimethoxy-1-indanone N4-allyl thiosemicarbazone [2,3]; namely: i) networks of pHEMA-co-β-CD prepared through conventional free radical polymerization using a polymerizable β-CD derivative (mono-MA-β-CD) [4]; and ii) networks prepared by direct cross-linking of HP-β-CD and HP-β-CD/HPMC (1.0% w/v) with EGDE [5].
