Resumen:
Senecio argophylloides (c.n: "tola blanca" or "monte blanco") is a whitish branched shrub endemic from high mountains of northwestern Argentina. It is traditionally used for the preparation of "llista" or "yista" and combined with other medicinal plants is used as a bath to calm muscular pains. The aim of this study was to determine the content of phenolic compounds (phenols and flavonoids) and evaluate the antioxidant potential of organic and aqueous extracts. The hidroalcoholic extract showed higher content of phenols and the methanolic extract presented a higher content of flavonoids. The extracts showed, in DPPH• radical scavenning method, an activity (IC50) between 137 and 495 ppm compared with 30 ppm of the synthetic antioxidant (BHT). The β-carotene bleaching test showed that aqueous extracts had more activity than organic extracts.
