Clotilde Guillén was an Argentine educator, born to a Spanish hairdresser, Domingo Guillén, and a French-born housewife, Natalia de Guillén. She spent her childhood in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1899, at nineteen, she graduated as a teacher from Buenos Aires Normal School of Teachers and devoted herself to teaching at elementary schools from 1900 to 1905. The following year, when she was 26 years old, she entered the Facultad de Filosofia y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the University of Buenos Aires), which had recently annexed the Instituto Nacional del Profesorado Secundario (National High School Training Institute), to pursue higher education and obtain a diploma which would enable her to teach at a secondary and tertiary level.
