Resumen:
Perhaps because turbulence is central to a variety of applications for atmospheric and oceanic flows, as well as engineering, and yet remains largely unsolved, high-performance computing plays a central role, on par with observations and experiments, for progressing in our detailed understanding of such flows. These approaches are complementary, and both direct numerical simulations (DNS) and large eddy simulations (LES) give a large amount of information, in particular for small scale statistics where intermittent event occur, although Reynolds numbers in DNS remain small compared to those encountered in geophysical and astrophysical flows.
