Discourse and context are recurrently used terms in everyday life. They appear in a wide range of social spaces, with different meanings. This variety of possible meanings for discourse and context is also found in the academic fields of sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, two areas in which they constitute key concepts. In this entry, we will introduce the notions of discourse and context that are employed by the main frameworks of these branches of linguistics. This way, we will describe different perspectives that study the relationships between language and society, and how they approach the question of meaning.
