We have studied the occurrence of squeezing in spin clusters. We have considered open spin chains with nearest-neighbour interactions, and taken the fluctuations of the total spin in arbitrary space directions as an indicator of squeezing. We analyze the dependence of spin squeezing upon the coupling constants of the interaction, for different number of atoms, and upon the preparation of the initial state (a Coherent Spin State). We extended this calculations to consider site-dependent spin-spin interactions. We found that: i) there is a suppression of squeezing due to the asymmetry of the interaction, ii) the dependence of the squeezing upon the parameters of the initial condition (CSS) is very strong, iii) long-range interactions could optimize the degree of spin squeezing.
