Resumen:
Sea-level rise and changes in storm-surge regimes are expected to lead to an increased risk of flooding in coastal areas. Household-level adaptation can effectively contribute to sustainable risk management. Regardless of protection measures at state or regional level, coastal dwellers are able, to a large extent, to protect their properties from flood damages by themselves. Political constraints and cultural differences may however influence their decisions on whether and how to adapt. This study investigates whether coastal dwellers are currently adapting proactively to current changes in flooding regimes. Quantitative surveys were conducted in coastal areas, with similar exposure, in Argentina and Germany. Adaptation was assessed by a list of 28 single measures classified under: being informed; networking and participation; preparedness; avoidance; devices; structural measures; and migration. Results show no significant differences between the two cases in the number of implemented measures. However, the composition of single measures can differ considerably.
