Resumen:
In this text, we analyse two instances of gift giving in the thirteenth-century Egils saga Skallagrímssonar. Both presents cause a furious reaction in the receivers, repectively the main character of the saga (Egill) and his father (Skalla-Grímr). Our goal is to attempt an explanation of the logic behind each reaction. On the one hand, we argue that some differences between the scenes can be explained in literary terms, due to the differences in the character portrayal of Egill, Þórólfr and Skalla-Grímr. On the other hand, some differences should be explained in sociological terms, as they seem to derive from the diverging structure in the circulation of gifts in each case.
