Resumen:
The insertion of a catheter into an obstructed artery produces an additional obstruction that increases the measured pressure drop. In this work, the deviations introduced by the catheter on its own measurements are determined. This study is performed by solving a model of equations based on the hypothesis of incompressible flow, Newtonian fluid and rigid arterial wall, with geometrical data supported by angiographic observations. The equations are solved by means of finite element method. The results show that catheters used in the medical practice lead to an overestimated measurement; therefore, thinner catheters are required in order to achieve reliable values of the pressure drop.
