Recent events have highlighted a traditional problem of the development of democratic consciousness, namely how the multiple facets needed for a well-founded shared public opinion should be articulated and put into practice in discursive communication? I will introduce this issue by showing the transformation of Habermas´ understanding of public opinion and his progressive approach to Deweyan pragmatism. Then, I will argue that a second step is necessary: Recognition, a ?pedagogical? requirement for the formation of a democratic will, coming from the Hegelian tradition which Honneth draws upon, and Dewey´s singular approach to it.
