The role of scientific research in social and environmental problems

During the last two decades, Latin America experienced a commodity boom, and, once again, began to specialize in the extraction and export of natural resources. Regularly, natural resources create a vision of a prosperous and glorious future and therefore contribute to myths of development that go hand in hand with the extraction, appropriation, and exportation of natural resources.The panel’s objective is to uncover and discuss these myths on various levels. In addition to the political, economic, and social dynamics this panel focuses also on cultural and discursive aspects related to the myth of development in Latin America. In this perspective, the panel embraces the ambiguities and contradictions of glorified futures that materialize in institutional settings, social configurations, and political discourses and thus contributes to demystifying these glorified futures.
