Resumen:
The TBAR`S test measures lipoperoxidation levels as substances reactive to thiobarbituric acid. Hiperglycemia increases the production of free radicals leading to oxidative stress. High insulin serum levels and lipid alterations has been hypothesized as factors contributing to oxidative stress. In Type 2 Diabetes patients the main changes in serum lipids are an increase of triacylglicerides (TG) and a decrease of HDL- cholesterol. Changes includes small, dense LDL particles. This work aimed at measuring TBAR`S levels in 40 type II diabetic patients from Concarán. Chacabuco Department, San Luis Province. Serum TG, total Cholesterol (TC), HDL- cholesterol and LDL- cholesterol were also measured. Blood was withdrawn after a 12 h. fasting, while patients  were not taking oral antidiabetic drugs. Each serum sample was divided in two aliquots: one was frozen at ?70º C until the determination of TBAR`S was performed and the others was used to measure srum lipids using commercial kits. Results were as follows: TBAR`S= 1,21±0,2 mmol/L. Lipids (in g/l) TG = 2,64 ± 0,7; TC= 2,03 ± 0,4; HDL- cholesterol= 0,43 ± 0,1; LDL- cholesterol= 1,14 ± 0,1. It is concluded that type 2  diabetic patients have an increase pf lipid an increase of lipid peroxidation in serum, suggesting a decrease in antioxidant capacity.
