Apoptosis or programmed cell death is a complex
mechanism by which cells that have suffered genetic damage are eliminated. We
have developed a cancer model induced byUVBin Hairless mice. In our model, the
animals developed lesions with histologic diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma after
4 months with suberitematogenous doses of UVB irradiation. The early effects of
radiation was evaluated by irradiating the animals with a minimal
erytematogenous dose. Skin biopsies were obtained from the dorsal skin and
processed for routine H&E staining, and apoptosis (TUNEL). Seventy two
hours post irradiation, a maximal tissular response consisting on hyperplasia
and dysplasia such as suprabasal mitosis and loss of architecture. The TUNEL
staining revealed scarce apoptotic cells in the epidermis and intense apoptosis
in the dermal components such as mononuclear cells and fibroblast.
