Resumen:
This study proposes a quantitative three-dimensional reconstruction of Middle Pliocene fluvial deposits, which belong to Ituzaingó Formation, and its comparison with modern analogue deposits from Paraná River. The study area is located in the ravines of Paraná River at Empedrado City (NE-Argentina). The outcrops were georeferenced, mapped with total station, and described throughout short lateral sedimentary profiles, colour photomosaics and measurement of paleocurrent directions were also recorded. The modern bars of Paraná River were reviewed as potential analogues, the same methods were performed to study the modern deposits. Choui island’s deposits show the similar characteristics that those from Ituzaingó Formation: grain sizes, sedimentary structures, hierarchy of surfaces, and architecture (thickness, width and paleocurrent directions). The results of the reconstructions of the Pliocene outcrops allowed to propose to the top of the deposits of Choui Island as confident modern analogues. It is means that the deposits of Ituzaingó Formation are only compared with the upper part of modern Paraná’s islands.
